Modern Technology Helps The Future Teach Us About The Past

Over the years, with the growing technology, helps people teach us past events. And in some cases, makes us relive them.

Since the late 1930s, films showed us, taught us, and let us live through the tragic story of the Titanic. But in late 1996, film-writer/director James Cameron started a long and trying journey. He always had an obsession with the story of the Titanic, and he wanted to bring his vision to the big screen.

Taking a pay cut, Cameron took a lot of his own hard earned money to recreate the Titanic. He wrote a script for the movie, with a love story attached to it. When Paramount Pictures approved, he had a replaca of the famous ship built. Going to great lengths to get every inch of his ship to match the real ship. With little things that veiwer don't notice, like the carpeting, the dishes, the lamps, the structure of the ship inside and out to be exactly the same. Although Cameron's Titanic was 100 feet shorter than the real thing, it didn't make a difference in the making of this would-be materpiece.

The lead charcters: Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt-Bukater, Cameron already had his choices made for the actors to play his characters. He asked, and then begged young, Oscar Nomiated actor Leonardo DiCaprio to play the lead role of Jack Dawson. Dawson, a young artist traveling Europe, though very poor. Wins his ticket on Titanic in a card game.

Kate Winslet, who plays Rose Dewitt-Bukater, is a proper, well-manner young lady who is engaged to a very rich man by the name of Cal Hockley, (Billy Zane). She maybe come across as a tight-nosed rich snob at first, but deep within, she longs to be free, to enjoy life.

Jack meets Rose on the top deck of Titanic, in a sterling effort of trying to save Rose from committing suicide, love can strike in the most unlikely places. Rose sees Jack, though poor, is the type of person Rose always longed to be.

Titanic soundtrack, composed and conducted by James Horner

Composer James Horner was given the job of putting together a score to go along with the movie. He wrote music to go along with each scene in the movie, but in addition to that, he wrote a song with songwriter Will Jennings. James Horner intended for only Canadian singer, Celine Dion to sing the song. Although James Cameron did not want a song attached to his movie, he fell in love with her preformace and used the song immeditately. Cameron was even rumored to shed a tear or two after hearing the now famous song: "My Heart Will Go On."

James Cameron's Titanic was released in the theatres of the United States December 19th, 1997. I when to see the movie along with my sister the day after it opened and will never forget the fear I felt along with the sadness and sorrow of watching such a massive ship die taking over 1,500 souls with it. Cameron when through great lengths to bring his vision to life. To make it as accurate as humanly possible.

It was hard for me to watch the movie without imagining myself placed in that situation, and it was scary. I felt truly frightened when watching the panic of the passengers and the breaking of the ship. The pure thought of having no way out of a deadly situation gives you the willies, trust me. Then a thought sank into my head that such a tragic event could have easily been avioded if human ignorance and desires had not stepped into the future.

I truly believe that James Cameron's Titanic is the closest we will ever get to feeling and knowing what it must have been like when the real Titanic died in 1912. I do not desire to go back in time and experience it myself, but it kind of makes you wonder what it really must've been like.

This movie deserved winning it's 11 Oscars. James Horner's score made our spine chill and James Cameron's sceens made us weep. It is the most wonderful and the most horrible movie I have ever seen, but I will watch it million more times in the future.
